Humber Teaching NHS FT Leading the Way with Rapid Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) Implementation
Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust (HTFT) has taken a major leap in digital transformation, rolling out EPS across all their physical and mental health services in just one month. A move already transforming patient care and daily workflows.
This pioneering implementation covered physical health, community wards, mental health services, CAMHS, learning disability services, forensics, and inpatient services. Crucially, the rollout was driven by direct engagement and feedback from frontline clinical teams, highlighting the Trust’s commitment to implement digital solutions that enhance everyday patient care.
Since going live, the Trust has quickly seen major improvements across the services providing:
- Greater accessibility for patients: Prescriptions are sent direct to local pharmacies, so patients can cut down on travel time, and collect them when it suits best.
- Faster and seamless workflows: Streamlined processes free up staff time, so clinicians have more time to focus on what matters most, patient care.
- Paperless prescribing: No more printing prescriptions, cutting costs and delivering significant savings.
- Real time visibility: Instantly track and manage prescriptions across services for safer, more responsive care.
- Smarter insight: Powerful reporting tools to support the Trust understand prescribing patterns and drive improvement.
- Improved patient experience: Fewer prescription errors and quicker access to medication.
By sending prescriptions direct to local pharmacies, families and patients no longer face long trips to collect their prescriptions. For example, children in Bridlington can now receive monthly ADHD medication without travelling to Hull, and those living in rural areas avoid unnecessary journeys too. Local pharmacies can also plan ahead and stock the right medication, meaning patients get what they need without delay.
Reflecting on this milestone, a Lee Rickles, Chief Information Officer at the Trust shared, “Rolling out EPS across all our services in just one month is a testament to the dedication of our teams and their commitment to improving patient care. By listening to our frontline staff and working closely with partners, we have implemented a solution that is already making a real difference to patients’ lives and the workflows of our staff.”
Abigail Palin, TPP Account Manager highlighted the broader significance: “Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust are leading the way in digital transformation, focusing on optimising and implementing functionality that directly benefits patients. It’s fantastic to see how EPS is already making care safer, quicker, and more convenient for people across the region.”
This achievement is part of the Trust’s wider digital programme — a commitment to making care more efficient, accessible, and patient centred.
